Short answer

Paste your names, choose the number of teams or the people per team, and press Make teams. The list is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator and dealt out evenly, so team sizes never differ by more than one. Copy the teams as text when you're done.

What it's for

Teams that are random, and feel fair.

  • Workshop breakouts

Mix people who don't usually work together. Groups of four to six talk; groups of ten wait for one person to talk.

  • Classroom groups

Random groups end the same friends sitting together every time, and nobody is picked last.

  • Sports and games

Split players into even sides for five-a-side, quiz night or a team-building game.

  • Project pairs

Set two people per team for pair work, code reviews or peer feedback rounds.

Picking a size

How big should each group be?

It depends on what the groups are for. A rough guide for meetings, classes and workshops:

2Pairs
Peer feedback, interviews, quick problem-solving. Everyone talks half the time.
3 to 4Small groups
The best size for discussion: enough views, nobody can hide.
5 to 6Teams
Good for workshops and projects that need a few skills in one group.
7+Big teams
Fine for sports and games. For discussion, split them again or give each person a role.

Group work in meetings

Group work that comes back with something.

Splitting people up is the easy part. In Agendiq, the group work is a timed block in the agenda: the countdown keeps everyone on time, everyone sends ideas from their phone, then you group them on the board and the room votes on the best ones.

  • A countdown for the group work, visible to everyone
  • Everyone sends ideas from their phone, no app needed
  • Group the ideas on the board, then vote on the best ones together
  • Decisions and owners written down before the meeting ends

Team generator questions

How does the random team generator work?

Paste your names, choose the number of teams or the number of people per team, and press Make teams. The list is shuffled once with your browser's cryptographic random generator, then the names are dealt out one by one like cards, so every team ends up within one person of the others.

What if the names don't divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. With 10 people in 3 teams you get one team of 4 and two of 3, never a team of 4, 4 and 2. The summary above the teams tells you the split before you press the button.

Can I choose how many people are in each team?

Yes. Switch Split by to People per team and set the size. The generator works out how many teams that makes and keeps them balanced.

Can I reshuffle the teams?

As many times as you like. Each press of Reshuffle is a fresh random draw, and the team names change too. Turn team names off to number the teams instead.

How do I share the teams?

Press Copy as text and paste the teams into a chat, an email or a slide. You can also share your screen and show the team cards.

Is my list of names saved?

It's kept in your own browser so it's there next time, and never sent to us. The generator takes up to 100 names.
