How to run it

  1. 1Run it in the first lab session of a course or on a new researcher's first day, before anyone touches a chemical.
  2. 2Give 20 seconds per question, reveal the answer, and read the explanation from the notes.
  3. 3After each round, point to the real equipment: the eyewash, the safety shower, the spill kit and the broken-glass box.
  4. 4Add questions about your own lab's hazards, such as biological agents or lasers, before you play.

Questions people ask

What are the most important lab safety rules?
Wear goggles and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, never eat or drink in the lab, read the SDS before using a chemical, work in the fume hood, never pipette by mouth, and know where the eyewash and exits are.
What are good lab safety topics for a first session?
PPE and dress, chemical labels and SDSs, the fume hood, waste and broken glass, and emergency equipment: eyewash, safety shower, spill kit and fire extinguisher.
How long should you flush your eyes after a lab chemical splash?
At least 15 minutes at an eyewash station, holding the eyelids open, then get medical help.
