Executive briefing: weekend support cover

Situation, options, recommendation, ask, risks · 15 minutes

Title

In short

An executive briefing gives senior leaders what they need to make one decision quickly: the bottom line, the situation, the options, a recommendation, the ask and the risks. This 13-slide template follows that order, runs in 15 minutes and asks leaders to vote on the options before they see your recommendation.

How to run it

  1. 1Write the bottom-line slide first. If you only got 60 seconds, that slide is the whole briefing.
  2. 2Replace the sample topic (weekend support cover) with your decision. Keep one slide each for situation, options, recommendation, ask and risks.
  3. 3Run the options poll before you show your recommendation, so you hear the room's instinct without anchoring it.
  4. 4Finish with the comfort scale and open questions, then confirm the decision, the owner and the date out loud.

Questions people ask

What is an executive briefing?
A short presentation that helps senior leaders make a decision or understand a situation fast. It starts with the bottom line and keeps background to a minimum.
How long should an executive briefing be?
Ten to fifteen minutes, with the answer in the first minute. Have an appendix ready for detail rather than putting it on the main slides.
How do you write an executive summary slide?
Write one or two sentences: what you recommend, what you need, and by when. If a leader read only that slide, they should be able to decide.
