Mission brief

Unclassified training brief · Five-paragraph order

Title

In short

A military briefing passes orders or information in a set order so nothing is missed. This 15-slide mission brief template follows the five-paragraph order (situation, mission, execution, sustainment, command and signal), adds orientation and a timeline, and ends with a backbrief check on the main effort, with a timer running on screen.

How to run it

  1. 1Fill in the sample training scenario with your own unit, task and timings. Use it only for unclassified material.
  2. 2Put the brief in an Agendiq agenda item so the timer runs on screen and the brief ends when it should.
  3. 3Read the mission statement twice, slowly. Pause on the main-effort check to confirm it landed.
  4. 4Where devices are allowed, use the clarity scale and the questions slide; otherwise take questions by hand and skip them.
  5. 5End with the time check and confirm when leaders will backbrief.

Questions people ask

What is the five-paragraph order?
The standard order format: situation, mission, execution, sustainment, and command and signal (SMESC). The US Marine Corps version uses administration and logistics in place of sustainment (SMEAC).
What are the types of military briefings?
US Army doctrine names four: the information briefing, the decision briefing, the mission briefing and the staff briefing. This template is set up as a mission briefing.
How do you write a mission statement for a brief?
One sentence covering who, what, when, where and why: the unit, its task, the time, the place and the purpose, starting the purpose with 'in order to'.
