Brainstorming session agenda

45 minutes 7 blocks Free template

Classic brainstorming rewards whoever talks first. Silent, simultaneous idea collection produces more ideas, more varied ideas, and fewer that only exist because the boss said them.

Why it works

Built so the brainstorming session agenda ends on time, with everyone in it.

  • Every voice in the first minutes

A 5-minute check-in: everyone sends a mood and one word from their phone, and it shows on their tile in the call. People who speak early speak again.

  • Updates stay short

5 minutes of updates with a visible clock. In a video call the speaker is spotlighted and the room is muted, so nobody talks over them.

  • Ideas from every phone

Everyone types at once and ideas land on the shared screen together. The quiet person's idea gets the same space as everyone else's.

  • Discussion with a clock

8 minutes of open floor with a countdown everyone can see, and a talk-balance meter so the loudest voice doesn't take all of it.

  • A vote the whole room sees

One tap each on a phone, live bars on the screen. A tick shows who has voted, never what they chose.

  • It ends in a decision

Capture the decision and its owner with one click while it's said. It lands in the summary, word for word.

How to run it

  1. 1Open with a bad-idea warm-up. It lowers the bar and gets laughter into the room before the real question.
  2. 2Phrase the question as 'How might we ...'. Put it on the phones so people see it while they type.
  3. 3Rename the vote options to your clusters before opening the vote.
  4. 4Do not evaluate during the ideas block. Clarify in the next block, judge in the vote.
  5. 5Capture each chosen idea as an action with an owner and the date of the first test.

About this meeting

This brainstorming session agenda frames one question, collects ideas from everyone's phone at the same time, clusters them on the big screen, votes, and ends with named owners for the top ideas.

Questions about the brainstorming session agenda

How do you structure a brainstorming session?
Warm-up, frame the question, silent idea generation, clustering, a vote, then decisions with owners. Keep generation and evaluation in separate blocks.
How long should a brainstorming session be?
Forty-five minutes is enough for one question. For several questions, run several short sessions rather than one long one.
How do you brainstorm with a remote or hybrid team?
Collect ideas on phones or laptops into one shared screen so remote and in-room people contribute the same way at the same time.

Run it with your team

  • A countdown for every block on the shared screen
  • A video call that changes with each block
  • Check-ins and votes from every phone, no app
