What's inside

By the end of this meeting, members have heard the church's finances and ministry reports and voted on each motion, with every result recorded. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Give members notice as your constitution requires, and publish the agenda and any motions in advance.
  2. 2Confirm quorum before business. Without it, hear reports but hold the votes.
  3. 3Use the phone vote for each motion so results are counted quickly and recorded in the summary for the church clerk.
  4. 4Keep reports short so most of the time goes to the decisions members came to make.
  5. 5Close with praises and prayer requests, then prayer, so the meeting ends as worship, not business.

Questions people ask

How do you conduct a church business meeting?
Open in prayer, confirm quorum, approve the minutes, hear the financial, membership and ministry reports, then take old and new business with motions, seconds and votes, and close in prayer.
Who can vote in a church business meeting?
Your constitution and bylaws decide, usually members in good standing above a certain age. Check it before the meeting and limit voting to those members.
How is this different from an annual congregational meeting?
Business meetings happen through the year, often quarterly or monthly, for regular decisions. The annual meeting usually adds elections and the yearly budget.
