How to run it

  1. 1Pick tonight's drills with the training officer before the crew arrives, and assign a safety officer for every evolution.
  2. 2Put each station on a timed agenda item in your drill-night meeting so the countdown keeps the rotation moving.
  3. 3Record times and results at each station on paper or in the meeting notes, against your department's standards.
  4. 4Finish with the after-action review on phones. Answers are anonymous unless you ask for names, so people say what really happened.

Questions people ask

What are good firefighter drill ideas?
SCBA don and doff, hose stretches, ladder raises, primary search, Mayday and RIT drills, knots, water supply, forcible entry, vehicle extrication and EMS skills.
How do you run a fire department drill night?
Brief safety first, rotate crews through timed skill stations, run one scenario, then hold an after-action review and put every piece of equipment back in service.
What is an after-action review?
A short debrief with four questions: what was supposed to happen, what actually happened, why there was a difference, and what we'll keep and change next time.
