Community town hall

Your questions, answered in order of your votes

Title

In short

A town hall meeting is a public meeting where officials or leaders give an update and answer questions from the community. This kit runs one in 90 minutes: residents send questions from their phones and upvote them by topic, the top-voted are answered first, and a live vote shows the community's priorities.

How to run it

  1. 1Publicize the meeting two to three weeks ahead and say how questions will work: from phones, answered in order of votes.
  2. 2Keep the official update to 15 minutes. Residents scan in and add questions to the board by topic while it runs.
  3. 3Have a moderator read the top-voted questions aloud so nobody has to queue at a microphone to be heard.
  4. 4Run the priorities vote before closing, and explain what happens next.
  5. 5Post written answers to every question, including the ones you didn't reach, within two weeks.

Questions people ask

What is a town hall meeting?
A public meeting where elected officials or leaders share an update and take questions directly from the community. Companies use the same format for all-staff meetings.
What should a town hall meeting agenda include?
A welcome and ground rules, a short update, plenty of time for questions, a way to hear the community's priorities, and what happens next.
How do you keep a town hall fair?
Answer questions in order of votes rather than whoever reaches the microphone first, keep answers short, and promise written answers to every question you don't reach.
