Planning poker

Estimate together. Vote at once. Talk about the spread.

🃏
Title

In short

Planning poker is an estimation technique where everyone picks a story point card at the same time, then the highest and lowest explain before a re-vote. This pack turns phones into cards, with six estimate rounds on a Fibonacci scale, a reference story, a fist-of-five confidence check and a word cloud.

  3. 3What a story point means
  4. 4Reference story: 'As a user, I can reset my password by email.' How big is it?1 · 2 · 3 · 5 · 8 · 13 or more live

  6. 6'As a customer, I can pay with a saved card.'1 · 2 · 3 · 5 · 8 · 13 or more live
  7. 7Wide spread? Highest and lowest: one minute each. Then vote again.
  8. 8'As a user, I see a friendly message when the service is down.'1 · 2 · 3 · 5 · 8 · 13 or more live

How to run it

  1. 1Replace the sample stories with the top of your backlog before the meeting. Keep the reference story so everyone shares a baseline.
  2. 2Read the story, take questions for the product owner, then everyone votes on their phone at the same time.
  3. 3If the votes spread wide, the highest and lowest estimators explain their thinking for a minute each. Then vote again.
  4. 4Anything at 13 or more is too big for one sprint. Split it and estimate the parts.
  5. 5Stop after about 30 minutes. Estimation gets worse when people are tired.

Questions people ask

How does planning poker work?
The product owner reads a story, the team asks questions, and everyone reveals an estimate at the same time. If the numbers differ a lot, the highest and lowest explain, and the team votes again.
What are story points?
A relative measure of the effort, complexity and uncertainty in a piece of work, compared with a reference story. They aren't hours.
Can you play planning poker online?
Yes. Share the presentation in your video call. Everyone joins on their phone and votes, and the spread appears on screen for the team to discuss.
