In short

A product roadmap shows what a team is working on now, what's coming next and where it's heading later, tied to its goals. This template runs a 75-minute planning session on a now, next, later board: stakeholders add problems to solve from their phones, dot-vote them and agree what moves and what the team won't do.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the roadmap has a small, committed Now, a shaped Next, a clear Later, and the things we're not doing are said out loud.

How to run it

  1. 1Invite the people who feel the roadmap: sales, support, engineering and a leader who can make trade-offs.
  2. 2Collect candidate items from phones as problems to solve, placed in now, next or later.
  3. 3Dot-vote, then shape the columns together. Keep Now small and move what won't happen to Not doing.
  4. 4Share the result from the meeting summary and revisit it monthly or quarterly.

Questions people ask

What is a now, next, later roadmap?
A roadmap without dates on every item. Now is committed work, Next is shaped and coming soon, Later is direction. It's easier to keep honest than a timeline full of guesses.
What should a product roadmap template include?
The goals it serves, items written as problems or outcomes, a rough horizon for each (now, next, later), an owner, and what you've decided not to do.
How often should you update a roadmap?
Review it monthly and replan it quarterly for most teams. Change it whenever you learn something that changes priorities, and say why.
