In short

Stakeholder mapping lists everyone who can affect or is affected by a piece of work and sorts them by power and interest. This template collects names from everyone's phone, lets the room place them on a power and interest grid, and runs a 50-minute agenda that ends with an engagement plan and an owner for each key relationship.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, every key stakeholder is placed on the grid with an engagement approach and one owner for each relationship.

How to run it

  1. 1Collect names from phones first. People are more candid about who might block the work when they don't have to say it aloud.
  2. 2Place each name together on the power and interest grid. You move the cards; the room decides.
  3. 3Agree how you'll engage each quadrant, then give every 'manage closely' stakeholder a named owner.
  4. 4Revisit the map at each project phase; people move as the work changes.

Questions people ask

What is stakeholder mapping?
A way to list the people and groups with a stake in your work and decide how to engage each one, usually by sorting them on a grid of power and interest.
What is a power interest grid?
A 2x2 grid. High power and high interest: manage closely. High power, low interest: keep satisfied. Low power, high interest: keep informed. Low power, low interest: monitor.
What is the difference between stakeholder mapping and stakeholder analysis?
Mapping is the visual sort onto a grid. Analysis goes further: what each stakeholder wants, how they see the work and how you'll engage them. This session does both.
