Retro time

Fifteen formats. Pick one. Make it count.

Title

In short

Retrospective ideas are formats that help a team look back on a sprint and agree what to change. This pack lists 15 formats, including Mad Sad Glad, 4Ls, Starfish and Sailboat, lets the team vote on today's, then runs four live prompts, a fix-first poll and a ROTI score on phones.

  2. 2Show the three format slides and let the team vote on today's format. Rotate formats every few sprints so retros stay fresh.
  3. 3Use the four live prompts for any format: rename them on screen to match the format you picked, such as Mad, Sad, Glad.
  4. 4Group similar answers, vote on what to fix first, and leave with two actions and owners.
  5. 5Finish with the ROTI score. If it drops, change the format next time.

Questions people ask

What are some fun retrospective ideas?
Rotate formats: Mad Sad Glad, Rose Bud Thorn, Three Little Pigs, Sailboat, Hot Air Balloon or a pre-mortem. Letting the team vote on the format makes it feel fresh.
What is the 4Ls retrospective?
A format with four prompts: what we Liked, Learned, Lacked and Longed for.
What is a starfish retrospective?
A five-part format: what to keep doing, do less of, do more of, stop doing and start doing.
How often should you change retro formats?
Every few sprints, or whenever the ROTI score starts to drop. The goal is honest conversation, not novelty.
