Action items that get done

How we write them, track them and close them

Title

In short

An action items template lists what was agreed in meetings, with an owner, a due date and a status for each. This kit runs a 30-minute weekly action review: open actions from earlier meetings come back on screen, stuck ones get unblocked, and owners get email reminders when actions are due or late.

  6. 6What stops actions getting done here?No clear owner · No date · Too many at once · Forgotten after the meeting · Blocked by someone else live
  7. 7How good are we at finishing what we agree in meetings? live
  8. 8Owner. Task. Date.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, every open action has a status, stuck actions have a way forward and new actions have an owner and a date.

How to run it

  1. 1Run the action review weekly, or open your regular team meeting with it.
  2. 2Show the slides once so everyone writes actions the same way: owner, verb, task, date.
  3. 3The follow-up block brings back open actions from earlier meetings in the series. Give each one a status.
  4. 4Spend the real time on stuck actions: what would unblock them, and who can help.
  5. 5Agendiq emails owners when an action is new, due or late, so the tracker stays current without anyone chasing.

Questions people ask

What is an action item?
A specific task agreed in a meeting, with one owner and a due date. 'Priya sends the revised quote by Friday' is an action item; 'look into pricing' isn't.
What should an action item tracker include?
A number, the action, the owner, the due date, the status (done, in progress, stuck or dropped) and a short note on what's needed if it's stuck.
How do you follow up on action items?
Review open actions at the start of the next meeting and give each a status. Agendiq also emails owners when an action is new, due or late.
