Month-end close

The checklist, day by day

Title

In short

A month-end close checklist lists every task needed to close the books, with an owner and a due day. This kit sets it out by business day on slides and uses it to drive a 20-minute daily close call: a live status vote, today's open items, a blockers board and a status email after each call.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold a pre-close meeting before month end to agree the schedule, owners and last month's issues. Adjust the close calendar slide.
  2. 2Run the call every day of the close at the same time, and start on time.
  3. 3Open with the status vote, walk only today's open checklist items, then go to the blockers board.
  4. 4Give every issue an owner and a time, and solve it after the call, not during.
  5. 5Send the status email from the summary each day. After the close, ask what to fix next month.

Questions people ask

What should a month-end close checklist include?
Cutoff and cash, receivables and payables, accruals and prepaids, payroll, fixed assets, revenue, intercompany, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entry review, flux analysis and the financial statements, each with an owner and a due day.
What are the steps of the month-end close?
Close the subledgers and check cutoff, book accruals and recurring entries, reconcile every balance sheet account, review and explain variances, then prepare and review the financial statements.
What happens on a daily close call?
Each area reports status against the checklist, blockers are escalated with an owner, and the team confirms tomorrow's deadlines. Keep it short and solve problems after the call.
