Welcome again: your first 30 days and our check-in

Thanks for a great first day. Here's what we covered and what's next.

Your buddy: ______
Your manager: ______
Your three goals for the first 30 days:
1. ______
2. ______
3. ______

Answers to the questions we didn't get to today: ______

Your 30-day check-in is booked for ______. We'll talk about:
- What's going well, and what's been harder than expected
- Progress on your three goals
- What you need from your manager and team
- What we should change about orientation for the next person

Use the 30-60-90 day check-in agenda for that meeting.

Welcome to the team.

How to run it

  1. 1Replace the story, mission, values and quiz answers in the deck with your company's before the day.
  2. 2Have IT in the room for the tools block. Working accounts on day one matter more than any slide.
  3. 3Use the culture quiz for conversation, not scores: after each poll, ask someone to explain the answer.
  4. 4Let new starters post anonymous questions on the board, and answer anything left over in writing by Friday.
  5. 5Send the follow-up with each person's 30-day goals and book the 30-day check-in before they go home.

Questions people ask

What should be on a new employee orientation agenda?
A welcome, the company's story and mission, how the team works, practical policies such as pay and leave, getting tools and accounts working, meeting the team and a buddy, open questions and first-month goals.
How long should new hire orientation be?
A half day works well for the first session. Spread the rest of onboarding over the first weeks instead of packing it into day one.
What's the difference between orientation and onboarding?
Orientation is the first day or two: welcome, basics and setup. Onboarding is the whole first few months, until the new hire is fully productive.
