How to run it

  1. 1Swap the sample numbers, shift times and phone extensions in the deck for your unit's before the day.
  2. 2Do the tour while it's quiet, and have every new nurse physically find the crash cart, exits and extinguisher.
  3. 3Use the preceptor board so new nurses can name what they're worried about without saying it in front of the group.
  4. 4Go through the competency checklist together and agree each nurse's first three sign-offs with dates.
  5. 5Send the follow-up so each new nurse and preceptor has the same checklist to work from.

Questions people ask

What should a nursing unit orientation cover?
How shifts, assignments and huddles run, a tour of supplies and emergency equipment, safety essentials such as patient identification and calling a rapid response, the preceptor relationship and the competency checklist.
How long is new grad nurse orientation?
It varies by hospital and unit. New graduates usually get a longer precepted orientation than experienced nurses who transfer in, with the assignment growing over the weeks.
Does this work for a nursing home orientation?
Yes. Swap the hospital examples for your setting, such as resident rounds and care plans, and adjust the competency list to the skills your facility signs off.
