Security awareness training

Phishing, passwords, MFA and the everyday habits attackers count on us to skip

Title

In short

Security awareness training teaches staff to spot and report the attacks that target people: phishing, fake MFA prompts, phone and text scams and tailgating. This 35-minute deck covers each with real-world scenario polls everyone answers on their phone, plus clear steps for what to do if you clicked.

What's inside

  1. 1Security awareness training
  2. 2Attackers don't need to break in if someone lets them log in. That's why this training is about people, not just technology.
  3. 3Phishing red flags
  4. 4"IT Support" emails: your mailbox is full, log in here to fix it. The logo looks right. What do you do?Log in to fix it · Reply to ask if it's real · Report it with the report button · Forward it to warn colleagues live
  5. 5Spot the lookalike
  6. 6Passwords that protect you
  7. 7Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere it's offered. If you get a login prompt you didn't start, deny it and report it.
  8. 8Your phone shows three MFA prompts in a row that you didn't trigger. What do you do?Approve one to make them stop · Deny them and report to IT · Ignore them · Turn off MFA live
  9. 9Beyond email
  10. 10The CEO messages you from a new number: they need gift cards for a client today, and it's confidential. What do you do?Buy them quickly · Reply and ask for details · Verify on a known channel and report · Ignore it live
  11. 11Handling data day to day
  12. 12If you clicked
  13. 13Describe a suspicious message you've had recently. (No links, please.) live
  14. 14When in doubt, report it

How to run it

  1. 1Fill in your report button, IT contact and password manager before you present. Swap in a real (cleaned) phishing email your team received.
  2. 2Ask everyone to join with their full name; the session summary lists who attended, which you can keep as your completion record.
  3. 3Vote on each scenario before you explain it. The split shows where your next phishing simulation should focus.
  4. 4Read some of the open-question answers aloud. Real messages people have seen teach more than any slide.

Questions people ask

What topics should security awareness training cover?
Phishing and its red flags, passwords and password managers, MFA, phone and text scams, physical security such as tailgating, safe data handling, and exactly how to report something suspicious.
How often should security awareness training be done?
At least once a year and when people join, which standards such as PCI DSS expect. Short refreshers and phishing simulations during the year keep it fresh.
What is phishing training?
Training that teaches people to recognize fake emails, texts and calls designed to steal passwords or money, and to report them instead of clicking. It often pairs a session like this with simulated phishing emails.
