In short

An investor update is a regular email from founders to investors covering key metrics, highlights, lowlights and specific asks for help. This kit gives you the email template and a 30-minute team session where everyone adds highlights, lowlights, asks and thanks to a live board, so the update is honest and quick to write.

[Company] investor update: [Month Year]

Hi all,

TL;DR: ______ (one or two lines: the month in a sentence and the most important ask)

METRICS (same every month)
Revenue / MRR: ______ (____% month on month)
Customers / users: ______
Gross margin: ______
Net burn: ______
Cash in bank: ______ Runway: ______ months
Headcount: ______

HIGHLIGHTS
1. ______
2. ______
3. ______

LOWLIGHTS
1. ______ (and what we're doing about it)
2. ______

ASKS
1. ______ (specific: who, what, by when)
2. ______

THANKS
______ for ______

Next update: ______

______ (founder)

How to run it

  1. 1Pull the metrics before the session and show them in the same order as every previous update.
  2. 2Give the team silent time on the board, then read the notes together and dot-vote what goes in.
  3. 3Lead with the most important lowlight and say what you're doing about it. Investors trust updates that include bad news.
  4. 4Make each ask specific enough that an investor can act on it in one email.
  5. 5Fill in the email from the follow-up and send it on the same day each month or quarter.

Questions people ask

What should an investor update include?
A short summary, the same key metrics every time (revenue, growth, burn, cash and runway), highlights, lowlights with what you're doing about them, specific asks and thanks.
How often should you send investor updates?
Monthly is common at early stages and quarterly later on. The main thing is a regular rhythm that you keep, including in bad months.
Should an investor update include bad news?
Yes. Lowlights show you understand the business, and investors can't help with problems they don't know about.
