In short

A monthly business review (MBR) is the meeting where a leadership team reviews last month's results against plan, explains the variances and agrees corrective actions. This 90-minute agenda starts with a written metrics narrative read in silence, reviews variances by exception, tests forecast confidence and ends with actions that have owners and dates.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the team understands why the numbers moved, trusts the forecast, and has owners and dates for every corrective action. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Lock the numbers and send the metrics narrative a day before; finance or the business owner writes it.
  2. 2Start with ten minutes of silent reading so the meeting starts from shared facts, not a slide tour.
  3. 3Discuss only metrics outside tolerance, and push for causes rather than descriptions.
  4. 4Rotate a deep dive each month so one area of the business gets real attention.
  5. 5Close with actions, owners and dates; next month's review opens with them.

Questions people ask

What is a monthly business review?
A monthly meeting to review business results against plan, understand what drove the variances, check the forecast and agree actions. It usually happens shortly after the monthly close.
What's the difference between a weekly and a monthly business review?
A weekly business review scans a fixed set of metrics quickly to catch problems early. The monthly review goes deeper into causes, the forecast and decisions about resources.
What should be in an MBR template?
Headline results against plan, variances with causes, leading indicators, the forecast, one deep dive, decisions needed and actions with owners.
