In short

A performance review is a structured conversation between a manager and an employee about the past period's work and the next one's goals. This 60-minute agenda starts with the employee's self-assessment, adds evidence-based feedback, strengths and growth areas, and spends a third of the time on goals and development. Your prep notes stay private.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, we agree how the period went, with examples, and leave with goals and a development plan for the next one. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Ask the employee to write a short self-assessment a week ahead, and gather your own examples from the whole period, not just the last month.
  2. 2Write your private prep in each block's note; notes never appear on the employee's screen or phone.
  3. 3Let the employee speak first, and keep your view to specific examples.
  4. 4Spend at least a third of the time on goals and development.
  5. 5Use the summary as the starting point for the written review, and share it within a week.

Questions people ask

What questions should a manager ask in a performance review?
What are you proudest of this period? What would you do differently? What got in your way? What do you want to learn next? What could I do to help you more?
How should I prepare for a performance review meeting?
Write a short self-assessment with two or three examples, note where you fell short and why, and bring your own ideas for next period's goals and development.
Is an appraisal meeting the same as a performance review?
Yes. Appraisal is the more common term in the UK; annual review and year-end review describe the same conversation held once a year.
