Questions, and what you need from whom

In short

A 30-60-90 day plan sets a new starter's goals for their first three months: learning in the first 30 days, contributing by 60 and owning something by 90. This template builds the plan in a 45-minute meeting between new hire and manager on a live board, then reopens it at each of the three check-ins.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold it in the first week. The manager comes with two or three outcomes for day 90.
  2. 2Both people add goals to each phase and questions to the last column, from a phone or laptop.
  3. 3Make each goal checkable, then book the 30, 60 and 90 day check-ins before you finish.
  4. 4Reopen the same board at each 30-60-90 day check-in: move what's done, adjust what's changed and note support needed.

Questions people ask

What is a 30-60-90 day plan?
A plan for someone's first three months in a role, split into three phases: learn (days 1 to 30), contribute (31 to 60) and lead or own (61 to 90), with goals for each.
What should a 30-60-90 day plan include?
Outcomes for day 90, learning goals, a first contribution, something to own, the people to meet, and the support the new starter needs, plus dates for each review.
What happens at a 90 day review?
The manager and new starter review progress against the plan, agree what's going well and what needs support, and set goals for the next period. Where there's a probation period, it often lines up with this review.
