What's inside

By the end of this meeting, I understand what keeps this person here and what might make them leave, and we've agreed one or two changes I'll make. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold stay interviews with your whole team, starting with the people you'd least like to lose, not only those who seem unhappy.
  2. 2Tell them a few days ahead what you'll ask, so they can think about it.
  3. 3Ask the questions as written and mostly listen; your job is to learn, not to explain.
  4. 4Commit to one or two actions you control, and check back on them within 30 days.

Questions people ask

What questions do you ask in a stay interview?
What do you look forward to at work? What are you learning? Why do you stay? When did you last think about leaving, and why? What would make your job better? How do you like to be recognized?
What is the difference between a stay interview and an exit interview?
A stay interview happens while the person still works for you, so you can act on what you hear. An exit interview happens after they've decided to leave.
How often should you do stay interviews?
Once or twice a year for each person, separate from performance reviews, with a check-in on the agreed actions within 30 days.
