Our class, our rules

Let's build them together

✋
Title

In short

Classroom rules are the few agreed expectations that keep a class respectful, responsible and safe. These 11 first-week slides help you build them with your students: three big ideas, what respect looks and sounds like, daily procedures and a class vote on the most important rule, which then goes on your rules poster.

How to run it

  1. 1Edit the procedures slides to match how your room really works: entering, materials, restroom, finishing early.
  2. 2Students can vote on tablets or phones by scanning the code, or you can read the options and count hands.
  3. 3Spend the most time on the 'looks like, sounds like' slide. Ask students for examples and add the best ones.
  4. 4After the vote, write the agreed rules on a poster together and have everyone sign it.
  5. 5Revisit the slides after a long break, when routines tend to slip.

Questions people ask

What are good classroom rules?
Three to five short, positive rules students help write, such as 'Listen when someone is talking' or 'Treat our things with care'. Group them under being respectful, responsible and safe.
What's the difference between classroom rules and procedures?
Rules are the few expectations for behavior. Procedures are the step-by-step routines for daily tasks, like entering the room or asking to use the restroom. Both need teaching and practice.
How do you make a classroom rules poster?
After the class agrees its rules, write them on a large poster in students' own words, and have every student sign it. Display it where everyone can see it.
