Code of conduct and compliance

Annual training: the rules we follow, the gray areas we talk about, and how to speak up

Title

In short

Compliance training explains the rules and values staff must follow, usually through the code of conduct, and how to raise concerns. This 40-minute annual deck covers conflicts of interest, gifts, anti-bribery, data protection and speaking up, with scenario polls everyone answers on their phone and a closing attestation check.

What's inside

  1. 1Code of conduct and compliance
  2. 2Lose money for the firm, and I will be understanding. Lose a shred of reputation for the firm, and I will be ruthless.
  3. 3This year's topics
  4. 4Before you act, ask
  5. 5Conflicts of interest
  6. 6Your partner's firm is bidding for a contract you're helping evaluate. What do you do?Score it fairly. You can be objective. · Disclose it and step out of the evaluation · Help your partner improve the bid · Say nothing unless they win live
  7. 7Gifts and hospitality
  8. 8Our policy: we never offer, give, ask for or accept a bribe, of any size, anywhere. That includes small "facilitation payments" to speed things up.
  9. 9A customs officer says your shipment will clear much faster for a $50 cash fee, no receipt. What do you do?Pay it. It's small. · Pay and expense it as "fees" · Refuse, and report it to compliance · Ask a local agent to pay it live
  10. 10Protecting data
  11. 11Speaking up
  12. 12Knowledge check: which of these must you disclose?A friend's birthday dinner · Shares in a key supplier · A branded pen from a vendor · Your weekend volunteering live
  13. 13Attestation: I've read the code of conduct, I'll follow it, and I know how to raise a concern.I confirm · I have a question first live
  14. 14When in doubt, ask

How to run it

  1. 1Have compliance or legal check the deck against your own code and fill in the gift limit, contacts and speak-up line.
  2. 2Swap one scenario for a real (anonymized) case from your business. People remember the cases that happened here.
  3. 3Vote on each scenario before the answer. The split shows which policy needs a clearer explanation next year.
  4. 4Polls are anonymous, so the closing attestation is a room check. Record individual attestations in your HR system; the summary lists who attended.

Questions people ask

What should code of conduct training include?
A simple test for gray areas, conflicts of interest, gifts and hospitality, anti-bribery, data protection, how to speak up and the promise of no retaliation, plus realistic scenarios to practice on.
How often is compliance training required?
Most organizations run it at onboarding and once a year. Regulated industries often have their own requirements, for example for anti-money-laundering training.
What's the difference between ethics and compliance training?
Compliance training covers the rules you must follow; ethics training covers how to decide when the rules don't give a clear answer. Good annual training does both, which is why this deck mixes policy with scenarios.
