Why it works

Built so the board round (red2green / safer) ends on time, with everyone in it.

  • Updates stay short

3 minutes of updates with a visible clock. In a video call the speaker is spotlighted and the room is muted, so nobody talks over them.

  • It ends in a decision

Capture the decision and its owner with one click while it's said. It lands in the summary, word for word.

  • A vote the whole room sees

One tap each on a phone, live bars on the screen. A tick shows who has voted, never what they chose.

  • Wraps up on time

Decisions and actions are read back, the summary is already written, and a finish on time earns the confetti.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold the round early every morning at the ward board with the multidisciplinary team.
  2. 2Make sure a senior decision-maker is present; without one the day stays Red.
  3. 3For each patient confirm the expected date of discharge and the clinical criteria for discharge.
  4. 4Ask "what is this patient waiting for?" and agree the actions that turn today Green.
  5. 5Manage constraints rather than just reporting them, and send the top five unresolved ones to senior operational managers each week.

Questions about the board round (red2green / safer)

What is a Red2Green board round?
A daily check of every patient in every bed to remove delays to treatment or discharge. It starts with patients marked Red and asks what each patient is waiting for.
How long should a board round take?
The NHS sources do not state a length. This template uses 30 minutes; adjust it to the number of beds.
Does Red2Green work in every department?
NHS ECIP notes the method does not suit high-turnover areas such as emergency departments.
