In short

Sales coaching is a manager helping a rep improve specific selling skills, usually by reviewing real calls. This 30-minute template starts with the rep's own review of a recorded call, picks one skill, practices it twice in a role-play and ends with the deals where the rep will use it this week.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the rep has practiced one skill from a real call and committed to using it on specific deals this week. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold coaching separately from the pipeline review; mixing them turns coaching into deal inspection.
  2. 2Ask the rep to choose a recorded call and the moment to review before the session.
  3. 3Focus on one skill, and practice it in a role-play instead of only talking about it.
  4. 4End with named deals where the rep will use the skill, and listen to one of them next time.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between sales coaching and a pipeline review?
A pipeline review inspects deals and the forecast. Sales coaching develops the rep's skills. Keep them in separate meetings so coaching doesn't turn into deal inspection.
How often should sales managers coach reps?
Weekly or every two weeks for 30 minutes works for most teams, with one skill per session and a follow-up on the last one.
What should a sales one-on-one cover?
How the rep is doing, a review of one real call or deal, one skill to practice, and a commitment for the week.
