In short

A project retrospective is a meeting at the end of a project where the team reviews what happened and what to do differently next time. This template starts with a shared timeline on a live board, adds highs, lows and lessons from everyone's phone, uses dot voting and runs a 75-minute agenda that gives every top lesson a home.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the team agrees the top lessons from the project and each one has a home where the next team will find it.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold it within two weeks of the end, and invite everyone who shaped the project, including stakeholders if trust allows.
  2. 2Build the timeline first from phones so the whole project is in view.
  3. 3Add highs, lows and lessons, dot-vote, and turn the top lessons into practices.
  4. 4Decide where each lesson will live (kickoff agenda, template, checklist) and who puts it there.

Questions people ask

What is a project retrospective?
A structured look back at a whole project once it ends: what happened, what went well, what didn't and what the team will do differently next time.
What's the difference between a project retrospective and a post mortem?
They cover the same ground. 'Post mortem' is often used after a failure or incident; 'retrospective' is the neutral, blame-free term for any project.
When should you hold a project retrospective?
Within one or two weeks of the project ending, while memories are fresh but people have had a moment to step back.
