In short

A world café is a large-group conversation format: people talk in small table groups, switch tables over several rounds and then harvest insights as a whole room. This template runs it in 90 minutes with three timed rounds, a live harvest board each table posts to from a phone, dot voting and a pattern-spotting close.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, everyone has talked with three different groups and the room has named the patterns it wants to act on.

How to run it

  1. 1Write three questions that build on each other, and set up tables of four or five with one host each.
  2. 2Run three rounds of about 15 minutes. Before each switch, each table posts its strongest insight from a phone.
  3. 3Dot-vote the insights, then harvest the patterns as a whole room and move them into the last column.
  4. 4Close with owners for the top patterns. The same harvest board works for other Liberating Structures and open space sessions.

Questions people ask

What is a world café?
A conversation method created by Juanita Brown and David Isaacs. Small groups discuss a question at café-style tables, then move to new tables so ideas cross-pollinate, before the whole room shares what emerged.
What are Liberating Structures?
A collection of simple facilitation methods, gathered by Henri Lipmanowicz and Keith McCandless, for including everyone in a group's thinking. 1-2-4-All and Troika Consulting are well-known examples.
What is open space technology?
A self-organizing meeting format developed by Harrison Owen: participants propose topics, form their own sessions and move freely between them.
What is appreciative inquiry?
An approach to change developed by David Cooperrider that starts from what's working. It usually follows a 4-D cycle: discover, dream, design and destiny.
