In short

A SWOT analysis lists an organization's internal strengths and weaknesses and the external opportunities and threats it faces. This template gives you a four-quadrant board people fill from their phones with no names shown, three dots each to vote, and a 60-minute agenda that turns the top notes into TOWS strategies with an owner.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, we have an honest SWOT, the top notes are paired into strategies, and the first move has an owner.

How to run it

  1. 1Agree the scope before anyone writes: one product, team or plan, and the time frame you're judging it over.
  2. 2Run silent writing from phones, inside factors first, then outside. Names don't show on the notes, which makes honest weaknesses much easier.
  3. 3Merge duplicates and move misplaced notes, then give everyone three dots.
  4. 4Pair the top-voted notes into TOWS strategies, vote on the first move and leave with an owner and a date.

Questions people ask

What is a SWOT analysis?
A planning tool that looks at four things: strengths and weaknesses inside the organization, and opportunities and threats outside it. Teams use it before a strategy, a plan or a big decision.
What is a good SWOT analysis example?
For a neighborhood bakery: a loyal local following (strength), no online ordering (weakness), offices nearby that need catering (opportunity) and a chain opening on the same street (threat). Each note is specific enough to act on.
How do you do a personal SWOT analysis?
Use the same four boxes about yourself: skills that help you, gaps to close, openings in your field and risks such as a changing role. Ask a colleague to add notes too; others often see strengths you miss.
How do students use a SWOT analysis?
For case studies, group projects and career planning. On a live board each student adds notes from a phone, so quieter students are part of the analysis, not just the loudest group member.
