In short

Parents' evening is the UK name for short meetings between teachers and parents about a child's progress, usually five to ten minutes each. This kit gives teachers a timed ten-minute conversation plan (strengths, one next step, the parent's view, a shared action) and a follow-up note to send afterwards.

What's in the kit

By the end of this meeting, the parent knows what's going well, the one next step for their child and what each of us will do before the next check-in. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

The follow-up email

Subject

Following up from parents' evening

Dear [parent's name],

Thank you for coming to see me at parents' evening.

What's going well for [child]:
-
-

The next step we talked about:

What I'll do in class:
What would help at home:

I'll check in on this by [date]. If anything comes up before then, please get in touch through [school contact route].

Kind regards,

How to run it

  1. 1Set up appointment slots in your school's booking system. Ten minutes with a short gap between families keeps you on time.
  2. 2Before the evening, note two strengths with examples and one next step for each student. Have a piece of work ready.
  3. 3Run each appointment on the timer: welcome, strengths, next step, the parent's view, one shared action.
  4. 4Send the follow-up note within a week, with the next step and what each of you agreed to do.

Questions people ask

What questions should parents ask at parents' evening?
How is my child getting on with friends? What are they best at? What's the one thing they should work on next? How can we help at home? How will I know if things slip?
How long is a parents' evening appointment?
Usually five to ten minutes, booked in slots. Secondary schools tend to have shorter slots because parents see several teachers.
What do teachers talk about at parents' evening?
How the child is settling, what's going well, their progress and one next step, plus anything the parent wants to raise. A good appointment ends with one agreed action.
