How to run it

  1. 1Recruit a volunteer for each station and print each station card for its table. Run literacy or math night by swapping the station cards.
  2. 2Put the QR code at the door. Families sign in once, and you get an attendance count for your report.
  3. 3Play the family challenge while families arrive, then explain how stations work.
  4. 4Run three 15-minute rounds with a chime one minute before each switch.
  5. 5Gather everyone for the discoveries wall, the raffle and the take-home challenge.

Questions people ask

What is a STEM night?
A family event, usually at an elementary school, where children and grown-ups move between hands-on stations such as building, coding and measuring. The point is doing it together, not watching a demonstration.
What activities work for a family literacy night?
Story stones, build-a-word games, a readers' theater corner, a book swap and a make-your-own bookmark table. Keep each one doable in 15 minutes.
How do you plan a math night?
Pick four to six stations that use everyday math, such as estimation jars, shape hunts, measuring and simple board games, with a volunteer at each. Rotate every 15 minutes.
