PD day

One focus. Learn it, try it, plan it.

Title

In short

A PD day is a day without students set aside for teachers' professional development. In UK schools it's often called an INSET day. This kit plans a full day around one focus: whole-staff learning, timed breakouts, a protected planning hour, team time, and feedback teachers give on their phones.

How to run it

  1. 1Choose one focus for the day and say it in one sentence on the second slide.
  2. 2Model the strategy in session 1 so teachers experience it as learners.
  3. 3Run breakouts by grade, phase or department with the same three questions, and keep the timers on screen.
  4. 4Protect the planning hour. Teachers post the change they'll try next week from their phones.
  5. 5Close with the vote and the feedback question, and send the follow-up with commitments and what you'll change.

Questions people ask

What is a PD day?
A school day without students, used for teachers' professional development: training, planning and team work.
What is an INSET day?
INSET stands for in-service education and training. It's the UK name for a PD day, and schools in England usually have five a year.
What are good professional development ideas for teachers?
Modeling a strategy and letting teachers experience it as learners, peer observation, planning time to use what they've learned, and short follow-ups weeks later. One focus works better than five.
