Do shorter lecture segments improve recall?

A randomized study with first-year undergraduates · Author names, institution

Title

In short

A research presentation explains one study to an audience: the question, what's already known, the methods, the results and what they mean. This 15-slide template is sized for a 12 to 15 minute conference talk, with clear methods and results layouts, an audience prediction poll, a guess-the-result slide and live Q&A.

What's inside

  1. 1Do shorter lecture segments improve recall?
  2. 2Before we start: what do you predict?Shorter segments improve recall · No difference · Longer lectures do better live
  3. 3Our question: do 15-minute lecture segments improve recall one week later, compared with a single 50-minute lecture?
  4. 4What we already know
  5. 5Study design at a glance
  6. 6Procedure
  7. 7What we found
  8. 8Guess: how many points higher (out of 100) did the 15-minute group score? live
  9. 9Recall score after one week (sample, out of 100)
  10. 10Key results (sample)
  11. 11Limitations
  12. 12Takeaway: break long lectures into short segments with a pause between them.
  13. 13Next steps
  14. 14What would you like to ask the authors? live
  15. 15Thank you

How to run it

  1. 1Replace the sample study (lecture length and recall) with your own: one research question, your methods, your results.
  2. 2Open with the prediction poll and the guess. Audiences remember results they've tried to predict.
  3. 3Keep to about one slide a minute: this deck fits a 12 to 15 minute conference slot.
  4. 4Leave the questions slide up during Q&A so people can type questions while others are asking theirs.

Questions people ask

How do you structure a research presentation?
Question, background and gap, methods, results, limitations, takeaway and next steps. Lead with the question and finish with a single sentence the audience can remember.
How many slides for a 15-minute conference presentation?
About 12 to 15. Roughly one slide a minute leaves time to explain charts properly.
How do you make a scientific presentation engaging?
Ask the audience to predict the result before you show it, use one chart per slide, and say what each chart means in a sentence before you explain the axes.
