Title

In short

A journal club is a regular meeting where a group critically appraises a published paper and decides what it means for their practice. This kit gives you a 60-minute agenda built on three questions (are the results valid, what are they, do they apply), a 14-slide presenter template and a live practice-change vote.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the group has appraised the paper's validity, results and applicability and agreed whether it should change what we do.

The follow-up email

Subject

Journal club: bottom line and next month

Thanks for coming. Here's the appraisal.

Paper: ______ (authors, journal, year)
Question (PICO): ______

Are the results valid? ______
What are the results? ______ (absolute effect, confidence interval)
Do they apply to our patients? ______

The group's verdict: ______
Bottom line in two sentences: ______

Action, if any: ______ (owner, by when)

Next month: ______ presents ______ on ______ (date). Paper link goes out two weeks before.

How to run it

  1. 1Send the paper two weeks before, and ask everyone to read it with the three questions in mind: valid, results, applicable.
  2. 2The presenter fills in the slide template: PICO, methods, the main numbers, strengths and limitations.
  3. 3In the validity discussion, let the room find the weaknesses before the presenter points them out.
  4. 4Take the practice-change vote after the applicability discussion, not before, and compare it with the opening words.
  5. 5Write a two-sentence bottom line together. The follow-up sends it with next month's paper and presenter.

Questions people ask

How do you present at a journal club?
State the clinical question in PICO form, summarize the methods briefly, then lead the group through validity, results and applicability. End with a two-sentence bottom line.
What should a journal club presentation include?
The paper and why you chose it, the PICO question, the study design, a validity appraisal, the main results with absolute effects and confidence intervals, strengths and limitations, and your conclusion.
How long should a journal club be?
About an hour for one paper. Shorter sessions work if everyone has read the paper beforehand.
