In short

The business model canvas is a one-page map of how an organization creates, delivers and captures value, in nine blocks from customer segments to cost structure. This template puts the canvas on a live board the team fills from their phones, then dot-votes the weakest links and plans tests for the top three in 75 minutes.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, our business model is on one page, the weakest links are named and the top three have a test and an owner.

How to run it

  1. 1Print nothing: share the board on screen and let everyone add notes to the blocks from their phones.
  2. 2Fill the customer side before the delivery side, and mark revenue and cost notes with + or -.
  3. 3Trace one customer segment across every block to find the gaps, then dot-vote the weakest links.
  4. 4Leave with three tests, each with an owner, a measure and a date, and update the canvas when the results are in.

Questions people ask

What is the business model canvas?
A strategic tool created by Alexander Osterwalder that describes a business on one page in nine blocks: customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key activities, key resources, key partners and cost structure.
What order should you fill in a business model canvas?
Start with customer segments and value propositions, then channels, relationships and revenue. Fill the delivery side (activities, resources, partners, costs) last.
How long does a business model canvas workshop take?
About 60 to 90 minutes for a first version with a small team. Plan a shorter session to update it after you've tested the riskiest parts.
