In short

A mission statement says why an organization exists and who it serves; a vision says where it's going; values say how people behave on the way. This two-hour workshop collects values as behaviors on a live board, sorts and votes them, and drafts and votes on the mission and vision wording.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, we have three to five values written as behaviors and agreed draft wording for our mission and vision.

How to run it

  1. 1Invite people from every level, not only leaders. Values written by the top team alone rarely stick.
  2. 2Ask for values as behaviors from phones, so you get 'we tell customers bad news early' instead of a list of abstract nouns.
  3. 3Cluster the notes, give five dots each, then write the top three to five values as 'we do / we don't' pairs.
  4. 4Vote on the strongest mission draft, edit it live, and name one person to polish the final wording for sign-off within a week.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a mission and a vision statement?
A mission describes what you do today and for whom. A vision describes the future you're working toward. The mission should still be true tomorrow; the vision should still be ahead of you.
What is a core values exercise?
A group exercise where people name behaviors they see and want, cluster them into themes and vote on the few that are truly theirs. Writing each value as 'we do / we don't' makes it usable.
How do you write a family mission statement?
Use the same steps at the kitchen table: everyone names moments the family felt at its best, you group them into three to five values, then write one sentence about what your family stands for.
