In short

A PESTLE analysis scans six kinds of outside change: political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental. This template gives you a six-lane board with a prompt in each lane, notes from everyone's phone, dot voting for impact, a likelihood check and a 75-minute agenda that ends with owners for each factor.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, we know which outside changes matter most, how likely they are, and who is watching each one.

How to run it

  1. 1Write the scope (market, region, horizon) where everyone can see it before anyone adds a note.
  2. 2Walk the six lanes in order, about three minutes each, with people adding notes from their phones.
  3. 3Fix misplaced notes, then give three dots each for impact.
  4. 4Rate the top factors for likelihood out loud, and give each factor in the plan an owner who watches it.
  5. 5Rerun it once or twice a year; keep the watch list in the meeting summary so the next session starts from it.

Questions people ask

What does PESTLE stand for?
Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental: the six kinds of outside change that can affect an organization.
What's the difference between PESTLE and PESTEL?
None in substance. PESTEL lists the same six factors with Environmental before Legal. Use whichever your organization already knows.
What is a PEST analysis?
The original four-factor version: political, economic, social and technological. PESTLE adds legal and environmental, which matter for most regulated or resource-heavy work.
How is PESTLE different from SWOT?
PESTLE looks only outside the organization. Its findings often feed the opportunities and threats boxes of a SWOT analysis.
