In short

A change advisory board (CAB) is a group that assesses and advises on IT changes before they go live. This 60-minute CAB agenda reviews failed and emergency changes first, checks the forward schedule, then scores each normal change for risk and records a decision, both voted anonymously on phones.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, every normal change on the list has a risk score and a decision recorded, and last week's failed changes have been reviewed. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Publish the list of changes for review a day ahead, and ask each owner to attend for their own change.
  2. 2Review failed and emergency changes before approving anything new.
  3. 3For each normal change, run the risk vote and then the decision vote. Anonymous votes surface concerns people wouldn't say out loud.
  4. 4Move repeat low-risk changes to the standard change catalog so CAB time goes to the risky ones.
  5. 5Copy decisions and conditions from the summary into your change records.

Questions people ask

What is a CAB meeting?
A regular meeting where IT, service owners and the business review proposed changes for risk, timing and readiness, and recommend approval, conditions, deferral or rejection.
What is the difference between standard, normal and emergency changes?
Standard changes are low-risk and pre-approved. Normal changes go through assessment, often at the CAB. Emergency changes must happen fast and are reviewed by a smaller emergency CAB, then reviewed again afterwards.
Who should attend a change advisory board?
The change manager, owners of the changes under review, service and operations leads, security, and business representatives for the services affected.
