In short

A board of education meeting is the public business meeting where an elected school board hears from the community and votes on district business. What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the board has heard the public, approved the consent agenda and voted on every action item in the open. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Post the agenda and the board packet as your state's open meetings law requires, usually several days before the meeting.
  2. 2Publish the public comment rules with the agenda and read them aloud before comment starts.
  3. 3Use the consent agenda for routine items, and let any member pull an item for separate discussion.
  4. 4Take action items one at a time: motion, second, discussion, vote. Agendiq's summary records each motion and result as it happens.
  5. 5Keep first-reading policies to discussion only, and close by announcing any closed session with its legal reason.

Questions people ask

What happens at a school board meeting?
The board calls the meeting to order, hears public comment, approves routine items in a consent agenda, hears the superintendent's and committee reports, and votes on action items one by one before adjourning.
Can the public speak at a school board meeting?
Most boards set aside time for public comment with a sign-up and a time limit per speaker. The rules come from your board's policy and your state's open meetings law.
What is a consent agenda?
A group of routine items, such as minutes, personnel actions and bills, approved with a single vote. Any board member can ask to pull an item for separate discussion.
Are school board meeting minutes public?
In most states, yes. Approved minutes are public records under open meetings and public records laws. Check your state's rules for how quickly they must be posted.
