In short

A preliminary design review (PDR) checks that a design meets its requirements with acceptable risk before detailed design starts; a critical design review (CDR) checks it is mature enough to build and test. This two-hour agenda covers entrance criteria, the requirements trace, subsystem walkthroughs, risks, RID disposition and the board's recommendation.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, the board has decided whether the success criteria are met and every review item discrepancy has a disposition, owner and close date. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Publish the entrance and success criteria with the review invitation, and deliver the data package early enough for reviewers to read it.
  2. 2Ask reviewers to submit RIDs before the meeting so the session disposes of them instead of discovering them.
  3. 3Timebox each subsystem walkthrough and keep the requirements trace on screen when gaps come up.
  4. 4For a CDR, rename the meeting and use the CDR success criteria. The structure stays the same.
  5. 5End with the board's recommendation and an action list. Agendiq's summary records the decision and every action owner.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between PDR and CDR?
A PDR shows the preliminary design meets requirements with acceptable risk and can proceed to detailed design. A CDR shows the detailed design is mature enough to proceed to fabrication, assembly, integration and test.
What is a RID in a design review?
A review item discrepancy: a formal comment from a reviewer about a problem in the design or data package. Each one is accepted, rejected with a reason, or turned into an action.
What is a constructability review?
The construction equivalent: builders review the design documents before bidding or construction to catch details that are hard to build, sequence or inspect. This agenda works for it with the walkthrough organized by building system.
