In short

A design review is a meeting where reviewers check a design against its brief, budget and codes before it moves to the next stage. This 75-minute agenda adds a live comments board, sorts comments by severity, takes an outcome vote and ends with a decision record and owners for every comment.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, every review comment has a severity and an owner, and the milestone has a recorded outcome: approved, approved with comments, or revise and resubmit. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Send the drawings or model and the review criteria at least three working days ahead so reviewers come with comments already drafted.
  2. 2Keep the walkthrough to 15 minutes and point reviewers to the riskiest decisions.
  3. 3Collect comments on the board, one issue per card with a sheet or area reference, then sort them by severity.
  4. 4Spend discussion time on must-fix comments only, and assign every other comment an owner.
  5. 5Close with a recorded outcome and a response deadline. The summary becomes the comment log and decision record.

Questions people ask

What happens in a design review meeting?
The design team presents the design against agreed criteria, reviewers raise comments, the group sorts them by severity, and the approver records an outcome with owners and deadlines for every comment.
What should a design review checklist include?
The brief and requirements, budget, applicable codes and standards, coordination between disciplines, constructability or manufacturability, and open risks. Use it to tie every comment to a criterion.
How long should a design review take?
About 60 to 90 minutes for a milestone review. Send materials ahead so the meeting is spent on comments, not on reading drawings for the first time.
