In short

A mission or flight briefing is the standardized talk before a flight that makes sure the whole crew shares the plan, the threats and their roles. This 20-minute template covers weather, NOTAMs, aircraft and fuel, threat and error management and emergencies, and ends with an anonymous challenge-and-response readiness check.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, every crew member knows the plan, the threats and their role, and anyone with a concern has said so before departure. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Brief every flight the same way, in the same order, so a missing item stands out.
  2. 2Spend the most time on threats and errors for today's flight, not on reading out routine information.
  3. 3Use the anonymous challenge-and-response check, and treat any concern as a reason to stop and talk.
  4. 4Adapt the blocks for drone operations, air medical, flight training or military missions; the order still works.

Questions people ask

What is included in a pre-flight briefing?
Crew roles, the objective and timeline, weather and alternates, NOTAMs and route, aircraft status, fuel and performance, threats, emergency procedures and a final check for questions.
What information must a pilot review before a flight?
In the US, 14 CFR 91.103 requires the pilot in command to become familiar with all available information, including weather, fuel requirements, alternatives, known traffic delays and runway lengths and performance.
What is a military mission briefing format?
Many military briefings follow the five-paragraph order: situation, mission, execution, administration and logistics, and command and signal.
