In short

A material review board (MRB) is a cross-functional team that decides what to do with nonconforming material. This 60-minute agenda checks containment, assesses form, fit and function, votes a disposition for each NCR (use as is, rework, repair, return or scrap), records signatures and decides whether a CAPA is needed.

What's inside

By the end of this meeting, every open nonconformance has a recorded, signed disposition and a decision on corrective action. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Send the list of open NCRs with photos and measurements a day ahead.
  2. 2Confirm containment before discussing disposition, every time.
  3. 3Run the disposition vote for each NCR, then record the decision and signatures in your quality system.
  4. 4Open a CAPA for repeat or escaped defects, and review cost of quality and repeat parts at the end.

Questions people ask

What does a material review board do?
It reviews nonconforming parts or material, decides their disposition, records the engineering justification and decides whether corrective action is needed.
What are the MRB disposition options?
Use as is, rework to drawing, repair, return to supplier and scrap. Use as is and repair often need customer approval in regulated industries.
Who sits on a material review board?
At a minimum quality and engineering. Production, purchasing and sometimes a customer representative join too.
