What's inside

By the end of this meeting, everyone knows where the lab's projects stand, today's presenter has useful feedback and next week's journal pick is chosen. The full agenda is drawn to scale above: every block has its own timer when you run it live.

How to run it

  1. 1Keep a rota for the deep dive so everyone presents every few weeks, including the PI.
  2. 2Hold updates to 90 seconds on the timer; the deep dive is where the lab's time goes.
  3. 3Collect feedback on phones so the presenter gets written notes from everyone, which arrive in the summary afterwards.
  4. 4Vote on the type of paper, then let the next presenter pick the specific paper and send it two days ahead.

Questions people ask

What should a lab meeting presentation include?
The question, the data so far including what didn't work, what you think it means, and the one thing you want feedback on. Unfinished data gets the most useful feedback.
How often should a research group meet?
Most labs meet weekly for about an hour, with one person presenting in depth each time on a rota.
How do you make lab meetings less boring?
Keep updates short and timed, put one real problem in front of the group each week, and collect written feedback from everyone, not just the most senior people.
