In short

A value stream map shows every step, wait and hand-off it takes to deliver a product to a customer, with data on each. This two-hour workshop walks the stream, maps the current state on a live board, compares lead time with process time, designs the future state and gives each kaizen burst an owner.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, we have a current-state map with real data, a future-state design and kaizen bursts with owners and dates.

How to run it

  1. 1Choose one product family and calculate takt time before the workshop.
  2. 2Walk the stream in person, from shipping upstream, and add what you see to the board from your phones as you go.
  3. 3Put a number on every step and every wait, then compare total lead time with total process time.
  4. 4Dot-vote the biggest wastes, design the future state and give each kaizen burst an owner and a date.

Questions people ask

What is value stream mapping?
A lean tool for drawing the flow of material and information needed to deliver a product, with times and inventory at each step, so a team can see the waste and design a better flow.
What's the difference between a current state and a future state map?
The current state shows how work flows today, with real data. The future state is the design you're aiming for in the next few months, with the kaizen bursts needed to get there.
What is a kaizen burst?
A starburst shape on the map marking an improvement needed to reach the future state, such as cutting a changeover or adding a pull system. Each one becomes an action with an owner.
