In short

SIPOC stands for suppliers, inputs, process, outputs and customers: a one-page, high-level view of a process used to scope improvement work. This template gives you a five-column live board, filled from everyone's phone in the right order, and a 60-minute workshop that finds gaps, dot-votes the trouble spots and sets the project scope.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the process is scoped end to end with its suppliers and customers, and we've agreed what the improvement project covers.

How to run it

  1. 1Agree the process's start and end points before anyone adds a note.
  2. 2Fill the process column first with four to seven steps, then outputs and customers, then inputs and suppliers.
  3. 3Read it end to end to find missing links, then dot-vote where today's problems sit.
  4. 4Use the result to set the scope of the improvement project, so the team doesn't try to fix everything at once.

Questions people ask

What is SIPOC?
A high-level process map listing Suppliers, Inputs, Process steps, Outputs and Customers. Six Sigma teams use it in the Define phase to agree what a project covers.
In what order do you fill in a SIPOC?
Start with the process (four to seven steps), then outputs and customers, then inputs and suppliers. Starting in the middle keeps the map focused.
What's the difference between a SIPOC and a process map?
A SIPOC is a high-level overview with only a few steps. A detailed process map comes later and shows every step, decision and hand-off.
