Gemba walk

Go see. Ask why. Show respect.

Title

In short

A gemba walk is when leaders go to where the work happens to observe the process, ask questions and learn from the people doing it. This kit gives you a 60-minute agenda, question cards on purpose, process, people and safety on every walker's phone, a findings board with dot voting and a follow-up with owners.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, we've seen the work where it happens, captured facts rather than opinions, and agreed what to try and when we'll come back.

How to run it

  1. 1Pick one process and a clear purpose before you go, and let the area team know you're coming to learn.
  2. 2Everyone walks with the question cards open on their phone; advance a card at each stop so the group asks the same questions.
  3. 3Observe for a few minutes at each stop before asking. Write down facts, not judgments.
  4. 4Back at the board, sort what you saw, dot-vote the most important findings, and let the team propose what to try.
  5. 5This kit goes further than the 30-minute gemba walk agenda: book the return walk before you leave, and send the follow-up so the team sees what happens next.

Questions people ask

What questions should you ask on a gemba walk?
Start with purpose: what are you trying to achieve, and what's stopping you? Then process: walk me through this step, where do you wait or search? Then people: what gets in the way, and what help do you need?
What should a gemba walk checklist include?
The process and purpose of the walk, the route, questions for each stop, a place to record facts, waste and safety points, and the follow-up actions with owners and a return date.
What is a safety gemba walk?
A gemba walk focused on hazards: guards, PPE, walkways, near misses and tasks people avoid because they feel unsafe. This kit includes safety questions for every walk.
What does gemba mean?
Gemba is Japanese for 'the actual place': where the work is really done, such as the shop floor, the ward or the warehouse.
