In short

The PDCA cycle (plan, do, check, act) is a four-step loop for improving a process through small tests. This template gives you a four-part board, a 45-minute review agenda that checks last cycle's result, a vote to adopt, adapt or abandon the change, and a plan for the next experiment with a prediction and an owner.

What's inside

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, last cycle's change has a decision, and the next small experiment has a prediction, a measure and an owner.

How to run it

  1. 1Hold it every week or two, at the same time, so the cycle keeps turning.
  2. 2Start from last cycle's experiment: what you tried and what the numbers showed.
  3. 3Vote to adopt, adapt or abandon the change, then plan one small new test with a written prediction.
  4. 4Keep experiments small enough to run before the next review. Agendiq's follow-up brings the plan back next time.

Questions people ask

What is the PDCA cycle?
Plan a change with a prediction, do it on a small scale, check the result against the prediction, then act: adopt it, adapt it or abandon it. Then start again.
What's the difference between PDCA and PDSA?
PDSA (plan, do, study, act) is the version W. Edwards Deming preferred. 'Study' stresses learning from the result rather than just checking it. The steps are otherwise the same.
What is a PDCA example?
A clinic predicts that texting reminders the day before will cut no-shows from 12% to 8%. It tries it for two weeks at one site, checks the rate, then adopts, adapts or abandons the idea. Replace with your own numbers.
