Kaizen event

[Process name] · [Dates]

Title

In short

A kaizen event is a short, focused improvement workshop, often five days, where a team studies one process, tests changes and standardizes what works. This kit gives you a 4-hour day-one agenda, a 10-slide charter deck, a live kaizen newspaper board and a report-out template with before-and-after measures and follow-up audits.

The agenda

By the end of this meeting, the team shares one charter, has seen and measured the current state, and has a kaizen newspaper of problems, causes and countermeasures with owners.

How to run it

  1. 1Agree the charter with the sponsor before day 1: a problem in numbers, a target for Friday and a scope the team can finish.
  2. 2Use this kit for day 1. It goes further than the one-day kaizen event agenda: the newspaper board stays open all week and the team updates it every afternoon.
  3. 3Measure the baseline on the gemba today. Friday's report-out only counts measured results.
  4. 4Run the newspaper rule strictly: no countermeasure without a root cause, and one owner per line.
  5. 5Send the report-out from the follow-up on Friday and book the 30, 60 and 90-day audits before the team disbands.

Questions people ask

What is a kaizen newspaper?
A simple action list for an improvement event: each line has a problem, its cause, a countermeasure, an owner, a date and a status. The team updates it every day.
What is a kaizen board?
A visible board where a team tracks improvement ideas and actions from suggestion to done. During a kaizen event, the kaizen newspaper usually serves as the board.
What goes in a kaizen report-out?
The charter, baseline measures, what was changed, measured results, the new standard work, open items and the dates of follow-up audits.
