Preventing harassment at work

What it is, what it looks like, what to do when you see it, and how to report it safely

Title

In short

Harassment prevention training explains what workplace harassment is, how bystanders can step in and how to report it safely. This 45-minute deck uses real-world scenarios with anonymous polls, the 5 Ds of bystander action, a clear reporting path and a final knowledge check, so it's interactive, not a lecture.

What's inside

  1. 1Preventing harassment at work
  2. 2How sure are you that you'd know how to report harassment here? live
  3. 3What counts as harassment
  4. 4Intent vs impact
  5. 5What it can look like
  6. 6A manager often comments on how a team member looks, "as a compliment", in meetings. Is that a problem? No, compliments are fine · Only if she complains · Yes. It can be harassment and should stop · Only if it's sexual live
  7. 7Bystanders: the 5 Ds
  8. 8At a team dinner, a colleague keeps touching a new starter's arm. She looks uncomfortable. What do you do first?Distract: pull her into another chat · Direct: tell him to stop · Delay: ask her later if she's okay · Nothing. It's outside work. live
  9. 9How to report
  10. 10Retaliation is against the law and against our policy. Nobody who reports in good faith, or helps an investigation, will be punished for it.
  11. 11Managers: your extra duties
  12. 12Knowledge check: which of these is true? It's only harassment if it's meant to offend · It can happen in chat and on video calls · Managers can wait for a written complaint · You need proof before you report live
  13. 13If you see something, do something

How to run it

  1. 1Fill in your reporting routes and policy link first, and have HR check the deck against your policy and local law.
  2. 2Say at the start that polls are anonymous. Have someone from HR in the room to answer questions.
  3. 3Vote on each scenario before discussing it. Ask what made people choose each option rather than announcing the right one first.
  4. 4Ask attendees to join with their full name so the summary records attendance; check whether your state also needs a certificate.
  5. 5Run a separate, longer session for managers on their extra duties to act and report.

Questions people ask

Is sexual harassment training required?
In some places, yes. New York State requires interactive training every year, and California requires it every two years for employers with five or more employees. In the UK, employers must take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment, and training is a common part of that.
What should harassment training include?
What harassment is, examples across in-person and online channels, how bystanders can help, how to report, what happens next, and the rule against retaliation. Add extra duties for managers.
What are the 5 Ds of bystander intervention?
Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay and Direct: five ways to help when you see harassment, from interrupting it to checking in afterwards.
